AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy

AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a training program designed to get puppies and their owners off on the right paw! The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program provides special training and recognition for responsible owners and their puppies.  This a great follow-up to our Puppy Life Skills or Puppy Basics class. Both purebred and mixed breed puppies are welcome to enroll. We recommend this class for pups 4-12 months of age. The AKC evaluation fee is included in the cost of the class (evaluation given at the last class). Puppies that pass the S.T.A.R. testing are eligible to receive a S.T.A.R. Puppy Olympic-style Medal, a listing in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records and a frameable certificate. This class is highly recommended for puppies and owners who deserve recognition for their Socialization, Training, Activity and Responsibility!

AKC Fit Dog Level 1

This is a fun fitness class designed to inspire you to engage in fitness related activities with your dog. This beginner level class will teach your canine fitness safety and skills to help with strength, flexibility, cardiovascular health, balance and much more. This is an excellent class for students involved in dog sports to help develop and maintain conditioning skills for your competition dog. Experienced instruction will help you learn proper form and minimize the risk of injury or harm. This class is not designed for dogs in need of rehabilitation. It is only for healthy dogs with no significant prior injuries or ongoing conditions.

Each dog team works on their own assigned safely spaced dedicated Klimb board apparatus and other items. However, to get the full benefit of the skills you will be learning, it is suggested that you have the following items at home, so that you can practice during the week. We will discuss options the first week at class and there is no need to purchase anything prior to the class:

-Some type of raised platform that is sturdy and can hold the weight of your dog. The platform should have good traction on top. A KLIMB pedestal, Cato board or other stable and low (12” high or less) platform is recommended. These can be easily homemade as well.

-A Rubber Feed Bowl (these can be found at such vendors as Tractor supply, your local feed supply store – used for pivot and turn skills

-A balance pad or equivalent (towel, yoga mat, pillow, etc.)

Attendees track their skills and progress using a provided AKC Skills sheet and will be evaluated at the last class (week 6) by the AKC Fit Dog Instructor and receive an AKC Fit Dog Certificate.

Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Prep

The American Kennel Club’s CGC Program is a wonderful way to showcase your dog’s good manners so he can be distinguished as a “Canine Good Citizen.” Prepare for the 10-step CGC test that covers basic skills such as loose-leash walking, sitting politely for petting, coming when called, and more.

A great follow-up class to Canine Cornerstones or one of our breed-specific classes, this four-week class helps dog and handler prepare for the CGC test, which is routinely given at BonaFide. The CGC distinction is also a great departure point for other canine activities, such as obedience, agility, therapy work, and more! The Canine Good Citizen Program is open to all dogs, both purepred and mixed- breed. For more information on the Canine Good Citizen Program, please visit http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/index.cfm.

Enrollment in this class includes an opportunity to take the CGC test during the fifth week of class.

Class Requirements:

  • Dog and handler must have completed at MINIMUM one basic teen or adult obedience class (puppy classes do not count) – PLEASE consult your current BonaFide instructor or contact us to see if your dog is ready for this class. The instructor has the right to excuse any dog that comes into class with insufficient skills to participate (no refunds or class credits).
  • Dogs should have a solid sit, down, recall (come), wait/stay, and be able to walk politely on lead around distractions before enrolling in this class. This class is a review and refining of basic skills, NOT an introduction to basic manners.
  • Harnesses, haltis, correction collars, and treats are not allowed during CGC testing. If your dog is still dependent on these kinds of aids to perform the behaviors listed above, he is NOT ready for the CGC class.
