Live and Learn

About the Course

Thank you for your interest in BonaFide’s Four Week Live and Learn training program. Live and Learn is an intensive training program where your dog will live with a trainer 24/7 in a home environment and receive obedience training, socialization experiences, and age- and health-appropriate structured exercise. Your dog will be part of the trainer’s family and will have interactions with the trainer’s dogs as appropriate, based on your dog’s social skills and behaviors. For more information about the trainers at BonaFide, please visit our About Us page to view trainer biographies.

After the four week program is complete, you will receive two follow up sessions with the trainer to hand off the training to you. The first is scheduled when the dog is returned to you, and the second is scheduled for one week later to help with any transition issues that have occurred.

Before your dog’s stay, you will receive:

  • Consult with a trainer regarding your goals for the session
  • Information about the trainer your dog will be living with
  • Contact information for your trainer
  • Pictures of the home where your dog will be staying, as well as the dogs he will be staying with
  • Transport of your dog from your home

During your dog’s four week stay, he will learn how to:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stand
  • Stay/wait
  • Walk on leash
  • Come when called
  • Go to a mat/bed
  • Greet people politely
  • Wait at doors
  • Go to a crate
  • Remain in a crate calmly
  • Ride in a vehicle calmly
  • Ring a bell to be let outside

These behaviors will be worked on in the trainer’s home, as well as out in the “real world,” to build reliability, including the ability to respond around distractions, at a distance, and for longer periods of time.

Your dog will also receive daily socialization sessions with the trainer’s dogs, other dogs known to the trainer, and as many people as possible to support a healthy social development. He will be given two structured exercise sessions per day, with the activity based on the weather, the dog’s age, and the dog’s general health.

During your dog’s stay, you will receive:

  • Daily email updates
  • Periodic video updates
  • Access to the trainer by phone at all times

After your dog’s stay, you will receive:

  • Delivery of your dog to your home
  • Two follow-up training sessions to hand off the training to you
  • A complete video reference library, showing the exact steps the trainer used to teach every behavior
  • Unlimited access to the trainer by email

Your dog is required to be current on rabies and all other relevant vaccinations, have a microchip, a well-fitted buckle collar and a tag with ID information. He will need to be free of internal and external parasites. You will also need to provide food, food bowls, crate, any special toys your dog enjoys, and a mat or bed for your dog to use while he is living with the trainer. If your dog requires any medications, you must provide the medications to the trainer in the original bottles with the original labels firmly attached. You must also provide contact information for your veterinarian in case of emergency, and at least two ways to contact you.
